Truck Accidents in New Mexico

Because of the tremendous size and weight of trucks and commercial vehicles, trucking accidents often result in catastrophic injuries. These injuries are often life-altering and require long-term care that is very expensive. Sadly, there is also an emotional toll that truck accidents cause, both on the injured person and his/her loved ones.

New Mexico has two major freeways that are the lifeline for consumer goods throughout the United States. Interstate 25 extends from Texas to Wyoming, with a great portion of the freeway in New Mexico. While interstate 40 extends from North Carolina to California, cutting east to west through New Mexico. The two freeways have a large amount of tractor-trailer and commercial traffic, as these highways are gateways to the east, west, and north.

A variety of factors can contribute to trucking accidents, but some common factors include:

  • Truck driver fatigue: There are stringent rules and regulations over truck drivers to help keep the public safe. The regulations set forth mandatory breaks and maximum hours and days a driver may be allowed to travel. However, often times, these regulations are violated to meet deadlines, or simply, to make more money. These negligent and reckless acts can (and do) cause driver fatigue. Of course, truck driver fatigue leads to horrible outcomes: poor reflex time, falling asleep at the wheel, poor decision-making, and a whole host of other issues causing horrible accidents with catastrophic injuries.
  • Distracted driving: Truck drivers are not immune to distracted driving. While distracted driving by any vehicle’s driver is dangerous, the sheer magnitude of commercial vehicles makes this activity by truck drivers incredibly reckless.
  • Improper maintenance:  There are also regulations in place for inspections of commercial vehicles. But, astoundingly, there are too many commercial trucks driving around with violations—many of which render the trucks out of service for road use. This negligent and reckless behavior leads to tire blowouts, faulty brakes, and other mechanical failures that could cause catastrophic injuries to you or a loved one.
